About Sumatra

Sumatra is one of the finest botanical destinations on Earth.

Home to more than forty species of Nepenthes, this remarkable Indonesian island supports an unrivalled diversity of tropical pitcher plants. From humid lowland forests to mist-covered volcanic summits rising above 3,000 metres, every change in altitude reveals an extraordinary new assemblage of species.

During this specialist expedition, we observe many of Sumatra’s most celebrated Nepenthes. Along the way we also encounter giant Rafflesia flowers, the immense titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum), orchids, tree ferns, colourful birdlife and the rich cultural heritage of the Minangkabau people.

Few places on Earth rival Sumatra for botanical diversity. Throughout the expedition we encounter an extraordinary range of carnivorous plants, giant flowers, orchids and ancient rainforest vegetation, many found nowhere else on Earth.

Getting There

Fly to Medan, Sumatra (KNO). We recommend flying via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, both of which offer frequent daily connections to Medan. Airlines serving the route include Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Batik Air Malaysia and Garuda Indonesia. We recommend arriving one day before the expedition begins so you can rest and recover from international flights.

Getting Away

The expedition ends in Padang, Sumatra (PDG). Frequent daily flights operate from Padang to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, providing convenient onward international connections. Airlines serving the route include Garuda Indonesia, Scoot, AirAsia, Batik Air and Citilink. We recommend booking departing flights one day after the expedition ends to have a little buffer time and decompress before heading home.

Day 1

Medan to Bukit Lawang

Please note: Precise location details have been omitted from this itinerary to help protect these fragile habitats and their Nepenthes from the ongoing threat of illegal collection.

The expedition begins in Medan, northern Sumatra, with hotel pick-up at 9:00 am. From here we journey through the lush lowlands to Bukit Lawang, one of Sumatra’s finest remaining tracts of lowland rainforest and gateway to Gunung Leuser National Park. Depending upon our arrival time, we may be able to undertake an afternoon rainforest trek or visit the bat cave.

Overnight: Bukit Lawang.

4 January
Day 2

Orangutans & Macaques

This morning we explore the beautiful rainforest surrounding Bukit Lawang in search of Sumatran orangutans. Other wildlife regularly encountered includes white-handed gibbons, Thomas’s leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques and a rich diversity of tropical birds.

After lunch we begin our journey south into the Barisan Mountains, arriving in Sidikalang by evening.

Overnight: Sidikalang.

5 January
Day 3

Highland Nepenthes

Today we ascend our first mountain in search of Sumatra’s remarkable highland Nepenthes. Among the species encountered are N. flava, N. ovata, N. spectabilis, N. rhombicaulis, N. tobaica and N. mikei, each occupying different habitats along the mountain.

Following our descent, we visit an additional site to observe the beautiful Nepenthes longiptera before returning to Sidikalang.

Overnight: Sidikalang.

6 January
Day 4

Nepenthes Tobaica

Today we visit one of Sumatra’s finest sites for Nepenthes tobaica, where an astonishing range of colour forms can be observed, including spectacular plants with almost black pitchers.

Depending on time and conditions, we may also visit sites supporting several species of Utricularia and the impressive giant form of N. rafflesiana.

We then continue to Sibolga.

Overnight: Sibolga.

7 January
Day 5

Nepenthes Heaven

Today we explore what we affectionately call “Nepenthes Heaven”, an exceptional lowland habitat supporting one of the richest concentrations of pitcher plants in Sumatra. Species encountered may include N. sumatrana, N. beccariana, N. rafflesiana, N. ampullaria, N. mirabilis, N. gracilis and both the red and white forms of N. eustachya, together with numerous natural hybrids.

After lunch at a renowned local seafood restaurant, we visit additional sites for Nepenthes sumatrana before driving inland to Panyabungan.

Overnight: Panyabungan.

8-10 January
Day 6

Expedition & Camping

The next three days represent a major highlight of the expedition.

We undertake an unforgettable trek up our second mountain, one of Sumatra’s finest Nepenthes peaks. As we climb through pristine montane rainforest and moss forest, we encounter N. gymnamphora, N. jamban, N. lingulata, N. taminii and the beautiful N. dubia.

We camp on the mountain, surrounded by spectacular volcanic scenery and extraordinary botanical diversity.

Overnight: Mountain camp.

Day 7

Travel Day

Following our descent, today is a well-earned travel and recovery day as we continue south through the Barisan Mountains to Lubuk Sikaping (Durian Tinggi), positioning ourselves for our next ascent.

Overnight: Lubuk Sikaping.

12-13 January
Day 8

Expedition & Camping

Following an early breakfast, we begin our ascent of our third mountain. The lower slopes support Nepenthes gymnamphora, while higher elevations reveal two of Sumatra’s most sought-after species: the magnificent N. izumiae and N. jacquelineae. Where the two grow together, their spectacular natural hybrid is often encountered.

We camp overnight on the mountain before completing our exploration and descending the following day. We then return to Lubuk Sikaping.

Overnight: Lubuk Sikaping.

14 January
Day 9

Rafflesia Reserve

Today we visit one of Sumatra’s finest botanical reserves in search of two of the world’s largest flowers: Rafflesia arnoldii and the giant titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum). Other remarkable plants found here include A. gigas and Rhizanthes.

Although flowering can never be guaranteed, Rafflesia blooms are regularly encountered. Nepenthes reinwardtiana and N. tobaica can also be seen in this reserve.

Later we visit a community-run project producing ethically collected wild civet coffee (kopi luwak) before continuing to Bukittinggi.

Overnight: Bukittinggi.

15 January
Day 10

Minangkabau Royal Palace

This morning we visit the magnificent Minangkabau Royal Palace, one of western Sumatra’s finest cultural landmarks and an outstanding example of traditional Minangkabau architecture.

Later we continue our journey towards the town of Padang Panjang.

Overnight: Padang Panjang.

16 January
Day 11

Departure from Padang

Participants not joining the extension are transferred to Padang for drop-off. Departing flights may be scheduled for this evening, although we recommend staying overnight and flying the following day to allow time to relax and provide a buffer before your onward journey.

Expedition Flexibility
Please note that a degree of flexibility is essential on expeditions in Sumatra. Weather conditions, road conditions and mountain access can occasionally require changes to the itinerary. Fortunately, the Barisan Mountains support numerous peaks, each with different combinations of Nepenthes species. Where appropriate, we may adjust the programme to maximise opportunities to observe the greatest diversity of species while ensuring the best possible experience for the group.

Add-On

Kerinci National Park

For those wishing to spend longer in Sumatra, we can set up the following optional add-on trip to explore Kerinci National Park.

We also encounter both red and green forms of N. gymnamphora together with the beautiful N. singgalana.
On our final morning we paddle back across the crater lake before descending to civilisation for a well-earned celebration dinner. Overnight: Mountain camp (first two nights), local hotel (third night).
